🗞️ Which local politician just got sacked?

Welcome

Looking like a sunnier week, but the weather still turning autumnal - perfect for checking out our new independent bookstore - and five others we recommend.

And which local boy is in the news (again)?

📚 6 Finchleyish Bookstores

In celebration of the opening of a new second-hand bookshop, here’s our roundup of six Finchleyish independent bookstores.

Muswell Hill just got a brilliant new book browse-spot: Muswell Hill Books & Parlour has opened in a former funeral directors on Fortis Green Road.

Run by husband-and-wife team Chris and Katrina Masson, the shop launched on 6 September and sells secondhand books, plus art and records, with space for readings, parties and pop-ups. Expect shelves from classics and philosophy to photography, science, occult, spiritual and antiquarian finds.

Chris cut his teeth at Black Gull Books in Camden and East Finchley, both now closed, so north London’s pre-loved scene gets a welcome lift.

Local Lowdown

Cricketing

  • Century and a half in style. North Middlesex Cricket Club celebrated its 150th anniversary by winning the Premier Division title in the Middlesex County Cricket League. Their third-ever triumph, sealed at the weekend, was captained by Jacob Miltz and feels like the perfect Hollywood ending for this milestone year.

Protesting

  • Towering tensions. Over 250 residents rallied against TfL’s five high-rise flat plan at High Barnet tube station. With honks of support from passing cars, protestors defied warning posters and staff presence, moving the demo across Barnet Hill. Residents say 283 flats are “too many, in the wrong place.” Objections close 19 September.

Winning

  • Musical maestros in the spotlight. South Hampstead High School has just been crowned UK’s top senior school for music by The Week. From ukulele jams and rock concerts to community sessions, their supremely talented students are making serious noise - literally. Our local music scene just got a standing ovation.

Traveling

  • Hop aboard the planned SL13 express bus: it’ll whisk you from Hendon War Memorial to Ealing Broadway in double-decker style with limited stops like Hendon Central, Brent Cross and Staples Corner. Running from 05:00 am to 12:30am, seven days a week, you could be zooming across town every 12 minutes.

Posting

  • Parcel hustle made easy. Aldi’s Station Road in Arnos Grove shop (plus others!) now sports shiny new InPost lockers. Drop off or grab online orders while topping up your snack stash - no more missed deliveries or rushing around.

The Finchleyite: Peter Mandelson

Local boy Peter Mandelson has got into trouble again about his association with and emails to Jeffrey Epstein. Now sacked as HM Ambassador to the United States.

Born in Hendon in 1953 Lord Mandelson grew up in Hampstead Garden Suburb and attended the Hendon County Grammar School. He also acted with local amdram group, the Hampstead Garden Suburb Dramatic Society.

He resigned in 1998 for failing to declare a loan from fellow MP Geoffrey Robinson, and again in January 2001 over allegations of misconduct in relation to a passport application for the Hinduja brothers.

Mandelson, grandson of Herbert Morrison, a key figure in Attlee's post-war government, began his political career in the Young Communist League before shifting to centrist politics at Oxford.

As Labour's director of communications under Neil Kinnock, he helped rebrand the party as "New Labour," playing a crucial role in its 1997 electoral victory.

We wonder what he'll do next.
