  • Goodbye to the old. Finchley's skyline is set for a shake-up. Goldstein Heather Architecture just got the green light to transform a pair of 1930s semis into a swanky 4-storey apartment complex on Regents Park Road. Expect nine stylish flats, mainly two-bedders, promising a slice of "elegance and understated grandeur" near the North Circular.

Shopping

  • Renovation revelation. The Temple Fortune Waitrose is hitting the pause button for a makeover, promising a fresh, new shopping experience by March. Time to plan our snack strategies accordingly. Maybe a switch to Tesco?

Primary Care

  • Top doc. The Muswell Hill Practice isn't just any GP surgery. Recently crowned 'outstanding' by the Care Quality Commission, it's now one of the borough's top-rated surgeries. Their secret sauce? A new purpose-built building, appointments out of hours, and they ensure homeless people can register even with no fixed address.

Exercise

Get ready to zip around town with more ease and less sweat. Plus, a new Β£ 3-day pass will give us unlimited sub-30-minute rides.

Hospitals

  • Big win for health. The Royal Free Hospital is setting a UK-first with a revolutionary Β£8 million PET scanner, thanks to the Royal Free Charity. Expect sharper, faster diagnoses with less radiation.

Finchleyite: Melita Norwood

Melita Norwood was a British civil servant, Communist Party of GB member, and KGB spy. She lived in Finchley.

She married Hilary Nussbaum, of Russian Jewish descent in 1935. He was a teacher and lifelong communist and changed his name to Norwood.

The National Archive files show that Norwood was involved in a spy ring. MI5 knew this, opened a file on her, and began surveillance at the Finchley home she shared with her husband.

Of the many British spies working for the Soviets, only Norwood was awarded the Red Banner.

Known as Lettie, she handed over crucial information to the Soviets over 39 years, aiding in their atomic weapon development, yet never saw her actions as unpatriotic.

She had many handlers. Some were strangers. She already knew 'Sonya', Ursula Kucyznski through her family's links with the Lawn Road flats.

Juggling espionage with her role as a working mother, Norwood's life inspired David Burke's book, "The Spy Who Came in from the Co-Op," highlighting her significance in a vast spy network. She died in 2005.

Editors' Note - From Tessa

Yesterday morning I delved into the world of football refereeing at Belsize FC (or rather Davis Child #2 did).

Once you're 14 years old you can join the FA scheme and train as a (paid) referee. After face-to-face training, you have to do 5 games before you are signed off.

Healthy, focused, community-based, and a great way for your kids to earn some money.

Recommended.
